Medigap Plan G vs Plan N
Plan G and Plan N are two of the most popular Medigap plans for people new to Medicare. Both cover the Part A deductible and hospital costs. The differences are in Part B cost sharing.
What is the same
- Part A deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026) and hospital coinsurance
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance, hospice coinsurance and blood
- 80% of foreign travel emergencies up to plan limits
- Neither covers the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026)
What is different
| Plan G | Plan N | |
|---|---|---|
| Office visit copay | None after Part B deductible | Up to $20 for some visits |
| Emergency room copay | None after Part B deductible | Up to $50 if not admitted |
| Part B excess charges | Covered | Not covered |
| Monthly premium | Usually higher | Usually lower |
What are Part B excess charges?
Doctors who do not accept Medicare assignment can charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount. Plan G covers that extra; Plan N does not. Most doctors accept assignment, and a few states do not allow excess charges, but they are worth checking.
How to decide
Add up the yearly premium difference between the two plans, then estimate how many office and ER visits you expect. If the premium savings on Plan N are larger than the copays you are likely to pay, Plan N may fit your budget. If you prefer predictable costs, Plan G may fit better.
